Physicians

David Chan, MD

Dr. Chan graduated from medical school and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA. Following a year on the UCLA faculty, he went to Stanford University for oncology. Dr. Chan is a longstanding instructor at the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center and has trained numerous medical students and oncologists in breast cancer treatment. He is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Breast Cancer: Real Questions/Real Answers, a guide for patients and families. He was instrumental in developing the UCLA Translational Research Institute, a clinical research program affiliated with the UCLA Division of Hematology/Oncology. That research has included many clinical trials in breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and lymphoma. Dr. Chan is Program Director for Oncology at Torrance Memorial Hospital.

Syed Jilani, MD

Dr. Jilani trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Missouri and in Hematology/Oncology at UCLA. He then became an instructor in the UCLA Division of Hematology/Oncology and published both in the laboratory and in the clinic. On his leaving UCLA to join Cancer Care Associates, Dr. John Glaspy, Director of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, made the comment, "Syed Jilani is the best oncologist to come out of the UCLA program in 20 years. We're sorry he has chosen not to remain at UCLA. Our loss is Cancer Care Associate's gain." Dr. Jilani is an expert at treating breast, lung, prostate, and colon cancer and all of the hematologic malignancies. He serves on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Torrance Memorial Hospital and on the Oncology Committee at Little Company of Mary, San Pedro. He is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Chairman of the Quality Assurance Commitee at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Dr Jilani is the Clinical Director of Cancer Care Associates.

Hugo Hool, MD

Dr. Hool attended medical school at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Jersey. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA-San Fernando Valley and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at UCLA-Olive View/Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He is from a dedicated medical family with a father and a wife who are also practicing physicians. Dr. Hool’s specialty interests include benign and malignant hematology, and the treatment of breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers and sarcomas. He also has experience in high dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue. He is fluent in Spanish and is active in programs related to Latino health issues. Dr. Hool is Chairman of the Oncology Committee and Director of the Inpatient Oncology Unit at Torrance Memorial Hospital. He is very dedicated to improving physician quality within our community and has been selected as a physician liason for Quality Assurance at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Physician Improvement at Torrance Memorial Hospital.

Vanessa Dickey, MD

Dr. Dickey attended medical school at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine at the USC affiliated Santa Barbara Hospital, she trained in Hematology/Oncology at the Norris USC Cancer Center. Dr. Dickey has participated in research using photodynamic therapy, a new treatment approach utilizing laser light activated compounds to destroy cancer at the Beckman Laser Institute in Irvine. She also has been involved in studies on the use of blood thinners for clotting disorders. She is an expert in benign and malignant hematology and has specialty interests in the treatment of breast, lung, and colon cancer as well as leukemias, lymphomas, and blood related cancers. She is the author of Hematology and Oncology, a textbook written for physicians. Dr. Dickey is the Medical Director of Oncology and Chairman of the Oncology Committee at Little Company of Mary Hospital. She leads the Transfusion Committee at Torrance Memorial Hospital.

Andrew Horodner, MD

Dr. Horodner attended medical school at the Univiersity of Arizona. He then trained in Internal Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Horodner completed a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at UCLA Harbor General Hospital with distinction. Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, Chief of the Divison of Hematology/Oncology commented, "Andrew Horodner is one of the best oncologists we have had at UCLA Harbor. Not only is he an exceptional physician but he is also a outstanding individual in so many ways." Dr. Horodner is expert in benign and malignant hematology. He has specialty interests in breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal cancer. Dr. Horodner is Chairman of the Tumor Board and Vice-Chair of the Oncology Committee at Torrance Memorial Hospital. He is an active member of the Tumor Board at Little Company of Mary Hospital. He also is a member of the Breast Cancer Conference at both Torrance Memorial Hospital and Little Company of Mary Hospital. Dr. Horodner is an instructor at UCLA Harbor.

Thomas Lowe, MD

Dr. Lowe is a distinguished graduate of the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. While at UCLA, he performed research on the biology and treatment of leukemia in collaboration with Drs. Schiller and Territo. He then continued in Hematology/Oncology at UCLA Harbor and subsequently The City of Hope where he was a protege of Dr. Robert Figlin, Director of Oncology. Dr. Figlin said of him, "Dr. Lowe is clearly one of the outstanding physicians at City of Hope. Tom has exceptional clinical judgement and an impressive fund of knowledge. He is also absolutely reliable." Dr. Lowe's specialty interests in oncology include the treatment of breast, ovarian, lung, colon, and prostate cancers. Dr. Lowe is also an expert in the treatment of blood disorders and all hematologic malignancies. Dr. Lowe is an instructor at UCLA Harbor. He is Vice-Chair of the Oncology Committee at Little Company of Mary Hospital, and is a respected member of the Breast Cancer Conferences and Tumor Boards at Torrance Memorial Hospital and Little Company of Mary Hospital. He is Chairman of the Breast Cancer Advisory Board for Little Company of Mary Hospital.

Mary Byrne, Oncology NP

Ms. Byrne is a nurse practitioner in oncology. She has a B.S. and Masters degree in Nursing from Georgetown University and also was a specialist RN on the Bone Marrow Transplant service at Georgetown. Prior to joining Cancer Care Associates, Ms. Byrne was the nurse practitioner for the famous Dr. Peter Rosen, one of the leading senior oncologists at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is known for being very knowledgeable and warm hearted. Ms. Byrne frequently lectures at nursing schools, conferences, and support groups. She is a preceptor for the UCLA School of Nursing NP program.

Leslie Laudeman, Head Nurse

Ms. Laudeman has a BSN from the University of Arizona and a Masters in Nursing from UCLA. Prior to joining Cancer Care Associates, she was the Oncology Clinical Consultant/Educator for Genentech, a biotechnology company. She brings vast nursing administration experience to the practice. Her previous leadership positions include being the Administrator for the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center, Nursing Director for the UCLA Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and Nursing Director for UCLA Medical Center Adult Oncology. Ms. Laudeman frequently lectures at the Oncology Nursing Society and is widely recognized as one of the top nursing administrators in Southern California.

Susan Starr, Oncology NP

Ms. Starr is a certified Oncology Nurse Practitioner and a licensed Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist with a BS in Nursing from USC and a Masters in Nursing from UCLA. Her training included internships at the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center, City of Hope, and Cedars-Sinai, as well as a period as an oncology nurse at an inpatient unit where she became skilled in administrating chemotherapy treatments and managing chemotherapy-related side effects. Ms. Starr has also worked as a nurse manager in a surgical office and as a nurse director for a surgical center. She takes pride in being a very caring and compassionate nurse.
